Best of the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge

There’s no doubt that the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is one of our favorite things to do on the Eastern Shore. It’s beautiful, of course, but more importantly, this protected swatch of habitat perfectly encapsulates the beauty of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay.

The Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is a 2,285-acre wildlife refuge sitting where the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay meet. As you walk through this beautiful island paradise, you’ll understand the gentle and enduring appeal of the Chesapeake Bay. The sounds of the city, cars, and busy thrum of modern life will disappear, replaced only by the gentle lapping of the waves, the rustle of grasses and trees, and the chirp of resident and migratory birds.

If the only thing you do at the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is slow down, that will have been enough. Having the chance to unplug is, after all, one of the many reasons to escape to the Eastern Shore to begin with! We hope you do more than that, though, as the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is a superb place for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, known for a remarkable diversity of birds and other wildlife.

This spring is an excellent time to visit the refuge, as it’s the season to witness one of the annual migrations through the area. Aside from birdwatching, there are other things to do at the Eastern Neck National Wildlife. Explore the diverse ecosystem of this wild treasure via the network of trails. For example, you’ll find a habitat teeming with colorful butterflies and wildflowers on the Bayview Butterfly Trail.

You can also enjoy the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge from the water. It’s a fantastic opportunity to paddle through the calm waters of the Chesapeake Bay, getting an up-close view of the area’s aquatic wildlife. This special place truly offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with and appreciate nature. We hope you take full advantage of it whenever you visit us at our Bed and Breakfast near Rock Hall.
