Seeing Tundra Swans is one of the best things to do in Rock Hall, MD during your romantic getaways in Maryland

Winter at the Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge

Whether you plan to spend the entirety of your romantic getaways in Maryland indoors, sipping wine with your sweetheart in front of a fireplace, or out making chilly memories on these scenic winter landscapes, we have no doubt you’ll love every second of your time at our Rock Hall Bed and Breakfast. There are several things to do in Rock Hall, MD, throughout the year. One of our favorite ways to enjoy the winter, though, is to watch the Tundra Swan Migration at the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge.

The Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is a part of the Chesapeake Marshlands National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which is home to the most complete network of protected lands and provides critical habitat for wildlife in our Nation’s largest estuary. There are 2,200+ acres of pristine habitat for birds and other wildlife. The area is particularly famous for its wintering waterfowl, especially migrating Tundra Swans.

The Tundra Swan Migration at the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge starts in November and typically extends through March. The refuge serves as an important resting and feeding location for Tundra Swans and other migrating species. The best place to see them is along the Tundra Boardwalk. As you walk through the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge this winter, you’ll see why they are a designated Important Bird Area. The habitats support over 240 bird species and a variety of other wildlife.

There are seven different trails throughout the Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge for wildlife viewing. As a bonus, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay as you wander the Refuge. This winter, you can also enjoy the quiet tranquility of the Refuge on group bird walks. Experts at the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge lead guided birdwalks on the first Saturday of every month starting in December and ending in March. Group size for these expert bird walks is limited, and they are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

While you’re enjoying a cozy, romantic escape at our Rock Hall, MD Bed and Breakfast, don’t forget to indulge in the winter oyster season at nearby Rock Hall restaurants, not to mention all the other wonderful things to do in Rock Hall.  It won’t take you long to realize what we already know – that winter on the Eastern Shore is perfect for romantic getaways in Maryland.
