Top Chesapeake Bay Beaches in Maryland

There’s something undeniably special about spending summer days near the water, especially when that water is part of the legendary Chesapeake Bay. Our 70-acre property on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is a favorite for unwinding, with shaded paths, lush gardens, and a saltwater pool perfect for lazy afternoons. If you’re in the mood for a little more adventure, grab one of our complimentary kayaks and paddle straight into the calm Bay waters. It’s an experience that’s hard to beat.

Still, no summer feels complete without a beach day or two, and some of the best Chesapeake Bay beaches in Maryland are just a short drive away. Here’s our round-up of favorite local spots that bring sun, sand, and an authentic taste of the Eastern Shore lifestyle.

  1. Rock Hall Beach at Ferry Park is just minutes from downtown Rock Hall and a quick favorite among locals. It’s a great option if you’re short on time or just want to mix in a little shopping, a visit to the Rock Hall’s Waterman’s Museum, or art galleries into your beach day. Come for the low-key vibe, stay for the incredible sunset views over the Chesapeake Bay. Follow up your beach day with dinner at one of Rock Hall’s waterfront restaurants, and you will have had a quintessential day on the Eastern Shore!
  2. Betterton Beach is where you go for a classic day at Chesapeake Bay beaches. It’s just 30 minutes from our inn and is one of the larger Chesapeake Bay beaches open to the public. It’s also jellyfish-free, thanks to its location at the intersection of five rivers. There’s plenty of room to spread out across its 700 feet of shoreline. For lunch, grab a cheese steak (or salad) from nearby Marzellas By the Bay. It’s a classic that’s been there for years! When it’s time to pack up, we recommend taking a moment to stroll through the charming town of Betterton itself.
  3. Tolchester Beach is tucked between Rock Hall and Betterton, offering a more private beach vibe and plenty of interesting local history. Accessed through Tolchester Marina, this members-only spot has become a beloved hangout for boaters and families who return to these relaxed Chesapeake Bay beaches year after year. The beach bar here has a lively summer calendar filled with music and events, and the seafood, especially the crab cakes, is the stuff of legend.

5 More Great Nearby Beaches in Maryland

Are you up for an adventure? These charming Chesapeake Bay beaches are just the beginning. If you’re willing to travel further afield or find yourself exploring further reaches of this magnificent place, there are plenty more beaches in Maryland to experience. Here are just a few to put on your radar.

    1. The beach at Ocean City is one of the most popular beaches in Maryland. It’s a far cry from our quiet Chesapeake Bay beaches, but it’s a fun, vibrant vibe that deserves a spot on your summer calendar. It’s about 2.5 hours from our Eastern Shore Bed and Breakfast, making it a doable, longer day trip if you want a more lively beach day.
    2. We can’t talk about beaches in Maryland without talking about the famed Assateague Island, home to wild horses and untouched landscapes that deserve a spot on everyone’s bucket list. It’s also about 2.5 hours from our Rock Hall Inn!
    3. A little closer to home in Grasonville (about an hour away) is the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center beach. Like other Chesapeake Bay beaches in Maryland, this one is a quiet, scenic spot for nature lovers. It’s more of a conservation area than a traditional swimming beach, but it’s ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, birdwatching, and walking trails with bay views.
    4. Matapeake Beach on Kent Island is dog-friendly and has a large stretch of sand for relaxing or playing. There’s a clubhouse with restrooms and picnic areas, plus trails that connect to the Kent Island South Trail, and it’s only about an hour from our Bed and Breakfast.
    5. Terrapin Nature Park, also on Kent Island, offers a more natural setting with views of the Bay Bridge. It’s quiet, peaceful, and full of wildflowers and native grasses, making it one of our favorite nearby Chesapeake Bay beaches in Maryland.

If you’re looking for fabulous additions to your beach day, consider visiting the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge or the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Both offer beautiful views with small beach areas, trails, paddling opportunities, and exceptional wildlife and birdwatching opportunities. When the sun dips below the horizon, come back to our Eastern Shore getaway and let the comfort continue.
