The Best Things to do on the Eastern Shore in 2023

Though it’s easy to paint Maryland’s Eastern Shore as a tranquil place where the world slows down – which is entirely accurate – it’s also true that there are plenty of things to do on the Eastern Shore. There’s a reason this quiet and scenic part of the state is a popular choice for weekend trips in Maryland.

When it comes to experiencing the best things to do on the Eastern Shore – particularly in the summer – you can expect the gorgeous waters of the Chesapeake Bay to factor heavily into the equation. Whether it’s getting on the water, feasting on delicacies that come from it, or enjoying spaces around it, it feels like it’s everywhere. There’s more than that, too! We’ve included some top things to do on the Eastern Shore below.

  1. The Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge is one of the top attractions on the Eastern shore among nature enthusiasts. Walking the trails at this scenic refuge is one of our favorite things to do on the Eastern Shore no matter the season. A similarly great place to explore is the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
  2. Crab is a summertime staple on the Eastern Shore – so it’s probably no surprise that one of our favorite things to do on the Eastern Shore when it’s in season is to feast on Maryland crab.
  3. If you’d rather spend your time on the water than consume what comes from it, we recommend taking a sailing cruise or fishing charter.
  4. Chartered excursions are fun, but we think one of the best things to do on the Eastern Shore is to navigate our water trails while you enjoy some kayaking on our various regional water trails.
  5. Biking season is here, and it’s one of our favorite things to do on the Eastern Shore. Plenty of people visit the area each year with Vermont Bike Tours, but there are also plenty of fantastic rural roads around the area that are perfect for a relaxed afternoon on two wheels.
  6. If you’re looking for something more relaxing, one of our favorite things to do on the Eastern Shore is to spend a day at the beach. Luckily, we aren’t too far from some of the best beaches on the Eastern Shore.
  7. As the afternoon heats up, it’s a great time to sip on a crisp, cool glass of wine from some of the top Maryland Wineries. Our favorite nearby winery is Crow Vineyard and Winery.
  8. You can also head into downtown Rock Hall and explore various activities there. Some of our favorite things to do in Rock Hall, MD, include visiting River Arts Gallery, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and the Mainstay Music Venue.
